YOUTH THEATRE & COMMUNITY

Our FREE Youth Theatre group for 14-19 year olds has been set up to create theatre that is inspiring, powerful and open to interpretation, allowing our company members to take ownership of the work and to feel proud of their achievements. We are also looking to start outreach projects that place the voice of the local community into the centre of the work. Our first project will be on raising awareness around Mental Health for 18-25 year olds, using verbatim theatre and a unique performance setting to share experiences in a safe environment.

ENGAGING YOUNG PEOPLE

SYNOPSIS

Burying Your Brother in the Pavement by Jack Thorne
A brilliant play for young people from the award-winning writer of Channel Four's Skins, the smash-hit stage adaptation of Vampire classic Let the Right One In and the forthcoming West End play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Tilly's brother Luke is dead. This has upset a lot of people but it hasn’t upset Tilly. Or, rather, it has upset her, but in ways she can’t explain and other people can't understand. You see, Tilly and Luke were never friends. In fact, Tilly didn't really like Luke at all.

So it’s an odd decision - to try and bury Luke in the pavement of the Tunstall Estate where he was killed. But to Tilly, it sort of makes sense, in a stupid-weird kind of way. As she sleeps out on the pavement, she comes across planning officials, tramps, undertakers, police officers, sisters, mothers, estate agents, ghosts, pavement elephants, sky dragons and a strange lad called Tight who wants to sell her a Travelcard.

This is a play about grief, and looking at someone that little bit more closely - oh, and there are a few songs, bits of dancing, and lots of weird things involving sofas.

UNLOCKING YOUNG PEOPLE'S CREATIVITY

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Community Theatre

We are going to create a unique theatrical experience which allows the actor to share their experiences in a safe environment, allowing the audience to become involved in honest conversations about the truths behind mental health.  Our space will become a platform for open discussion allowing both actor and audience member to share their thoughts and experiences around mental health to raise further awareness. We will be working with trained professionals to help devise a verbatim piece of theatre that breaks stereotypes and reveals the truth behind anxiety, depression and feelings of low self esteem. The end result will be a sharing of thoughts, affirmations and goals to help build towards positive life changes for both actor and audience member. Throughout the rehearsal process we will explore different ways of controlling mental health through drama & movement therapy, singing, music, dance, art, life coaching and other activities that can help relieve the stresses of day to day life.

Please let us know why you would be interested in joining the community group to create a project on raising awareness on Mental Health? Please be aware there will be an element of performance work in the project.

There is no doubt in my mind that I would not be where I am in life, both personally and professionally, without the time and dedication that Michelle put in when I was her student. An incredibly creative and talented director and teacher, Michelle continues to inspire me several years later. The creative work she produces is outstanding time after time. She has a talent for bringing out the best in people, regardless of background, experience or confidence. Cannot recommend enough.
